How to Attach DiscFinder to a Disc (Install Guide)

How to Attach DiscFinder to a Disc (Install Guide)

DiscFinder only helps if it stays on the disc. The good news: install is simple, everything you need is in the box, and a careful five-minute job beats a rushed slap-on that lets go on the first oak.

This guide covers DiscFinder Original (V1) and DiscFinder Tiny (V2). Adhesive type differs slightly by version, but the process is the same idea: clean surface → roughen → center → press hard → give it time.

For button use after install, see the installation & use page or your product insert.

What comes in the box

Typically included:

  • DiscFinder unit (battery ready)
  • Double-sided adhesive / mounting label (3M VHB—5952 on Original, 4991 on Tiny)
  • Sandpaper
  • Alcohol wipe
  • Centering template (on the sheet; also downloadable as PDF)

Optional but smart for power throws and tree-heavy courses: super glue (or Tec-7 / Loctite Extreme Repair style adhesives) as backup—especially on drivers.

Before you start

  • Work at room temperature—a bit warm is even better (sunlit windowsill, bathroom with floor heating). Cold adhesive doesn’t wet out well.
  • Pick the disc you’ll actually lose: the fairway driver that loves the left woods, the putter you scramble with in rough, the mid that always finds the ditch.
  • Plan to leave the disc alone for a while after pressing. Most plastics are ready in about 20 minutes; rubbery or oily plastics benefit from up to 24 hours of cure.

Step-by-step attachment

1. Prep the flight plate

On the underside (inside the disc), find a flat central area.

  • Slice or file away casting nubs / bumps so the plate is smooth.
  • A flat seat = full adhesive contact = fewer pop-offs.

2. Sand the mount area

Use the included sandpaper. You’re not polishing—you’re giving the tape microscopic “teeth.”

Sand a circle a little larger than the DiscFinder footprint, then brush dust away.

3. Clean properly

  1. Wash the area with water and a drop of dish soap.
  2. Dry thoroughly.
  3. Wipe with the included alcohol wipe.
  4. Let it dry about 1 minute.

Skip soap-only or shirt-wipe cleaning. Skin oil and mold release agents are why “I stuck it on and it fell off on hole 3” stories happen.

4. Center it (close enough is fine—exact feels better)

Exact center isn’t aerodynamically sacred, but it feels better in the hand and looks cleaner.

  • Cut out the template from the sheet (or download the PDF and print at 100% scale—no “fit to page”).
  • Use the guide to place the unit in the center circle.

5. Stick and press like you mean it

  1. Remove the protective film from the adhesive.
  2. Place DiscFinder in the center.
  3. Press firmly with your thumb around all edges so the whole unit contacts the plastic.
  4. Best results: set a glass or similar weight on top and leave it—ideally overnight.

Pressure activates VHB tape. A light tap is not pressure.

6. Wait, then test

Give the bond time before the first full-power tree line. Then do a casual catch / putt session before you trust it on a max-distance hyzer into oak.

Original vs Tiny: install notes

Detail Original (V1) Tiny (V2)
Weight on disc ~8 g with strong tape (~6 g without) ~3 g
Visible diameter ~32 mm (footprint ~42 mm) ~28 mm
Tape 3M VHB 5952 3M VHB 4991
Water Water-resistant (freshwater tested) Not for sitting wet / submerged
Extra tip Great default for wet courses Lightest feel; mind moisture

Moving DiscFinder to another disc

You can relocate a unit, but don’t reuse tired adhesive. Put on a fresh label / tape (or glue). Extra labels and super glue are in the shop.

When removing:

  • Work slowly—don’t pry in a way that gouges the flight plate.
  • Clean old adhesive residue before the new mount.
  • Repeat the full clean → sand → press process.

After it’s on: quick use reminder

Original (V1)

  • Hold button: on (1 beep) / off (2 beeps)
  • Short presses: 30 s → 1 → 2 → 3 min
  • Timer starts after last press
  • Short press stops the melody; short press again restarts
  • Auto-off after ~1 minute idle

Tiny (V2)

  • Power: 3 short presses on the left button (avoids pocket accidents)
  • Left / right buttons control start, intervals (1–3–5–10–15–20 min), stop, tone
  • Remembers settings until you turn it off—handy between holes

Full detail lives on the use page.

Realistic expectations

DiscFinder is light, affordable, and tough for what it is—but discs hit trees. Hard. In most cases the unit stays put (including ugly impacts). In rare cases a brutal strike loosens or damages it. Same world where discs get taco’d and we keep throwing them.

If it comes off: new tape or a dab of glue, and you’re back. That’s by design—simple parts, easy to fix, cheaper than losing the disc in the first place.

Environmental note

If a unit ever reaches end of life, remove the battery where possible and recycle as electronics waste.
